Women who Love Women: Conversations in Singapore: Sinema

About the Documentary

One of the few documentaries ever made about lesbians in Singapore, this documentary, filmed in 2006 uses interview footage with three Singaporean lesbians -Amanda Lee, Sabrina Renee Chong and Gea Swee Jean, to get a rare glimpse into lesbian lives in Singapore.

Intimate and often candid, these lesbians share about their lives and loves and their views on topics such as coming out and relationships. Sometimes heartbreaking, and often times, funny, the documentary captures the lives of lesbians who have chosen to live authentically and is a testament to the courage, tenacity and experiences of lesbians living in Singapore.

Sinema is extending our run again in this month of July, but are programming only 2 weeks in advance. Our confirmed screening so far is on:

An update will be given if the latter two screenings get confirmed. However, in the meantime if you can only make these latter screenings, call Sinema and let them know anyway and if there's enough interest, I'm sure they'll open up the screening.

More good news!

More screenings of Women who Love Women will be presented at Sinema in May! :) Well, pending MDA's reply to our application which we hope to receive by 2 May 08. This will be part of a Singapore Panaroma Encore series where some of the local films in the recent SIFF will be brought back.

Here are the dates and times for the 4 screenings:

There will also be a Q&A session at the end of each screening where the docu team will be there.

Bios

Gea Swee Jean (extreme right) is an ambitious young woman in Singapore. She loves women, cats, kopi (must be from the kopitiam, not Starbucks etc), good design, World of Warcraft, overachieving, artistic endeavours, her family and friends, standing up for what she believes in, tech gadgets, East Coast Park, world peace, doing a good job and making genuine connections with people.

She is also passionate about supporting good causes on a voluntary basis, such as helping to organise the monthly Women's Nite. Along 3 other team mates, she has also produced and published "We Are Family: Stories of People with Disabilities in Singapore", a fundraising book for the Spastic Children's Association of Singapore.

Amanda Lee (extreme left) is a twenty-three year old woman in an enduring journey about life and love.

Presently volunteering with Women's Nite, a group for non-heterosexual women to talk about issues close to their hearts, she has also volunteered with, and continues to support AWARE and Pelangi Pride Centre.

She is currently pursuing a Liberal Arts degree with planned majors in Gender, Sexuality and Culture and Religious Studies at the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia.

Sabrina Renee Chong (middle) is a veteran Events Specialist who is carving out her new passion and career in photography. Sabrina is currently planning and working on a project to make black and white portraits of gay and lesbian couples in collaboration with other new artists in Asia to do similar portraitures in their respective countries. This will hopefully culminate in a traveling exhibition to create more awareness for the GLBT community.

When not indulging in her passion for photography, Sabrina enjoys traveling, swimming, art and indie films, spending time with her cats or building her fashion empire AVENUE inc in SecondLife.

Lim Mayling, born and bred in Singapore and having pursued a BA in Media from sunny Tallahassee to the wintry state of Buffalo, is an information junkie with a terrible memory. Having an avid interest in the complexities of human nature and having found a love for documentary from discovering Frederick Wiseman and Alan Berliner, she is on a path to unveil inner personalities behind a person. A madhatter who relishes a challenge, her next motivation will be to portray person(s) within created restrictions on the filming process Lars Von Trier style.

Ngiam Su-Lin has never produced a documentary apart from Women who Love Women although she has produced numerous plays when working with The Necessary Stage. A Theatre Studies graduate from the National University of Singapore, she has worked in theatre for close to ten years, with various companies.

Her first love is still theatre even though she is really falling in love with documentary and film.

She currently lives with her partner and their 7 cats, a dog, tetras and sucker fish; and is a full-time student pursuing theological studies and counselling.

Wendy Siew, for 12 years, Wendy has been singing and writing songs on the guitar for friends, lovers and good causes. She plans to record them before she's 40 and forgets. She welcomes all opportunities to sing at public places especially if it comes with free beer.
